For patients with leg length discrepancy, short stature or orthopaedic conditions where lengthening is being considered on medical grounds.
The three main stages the process generally follows.
X-rays, general health and expectations are reviewed with the surgeon, who decides on the method and target.
During surgery, a distraction device (for example an intramedullary nail or an external fixator) is usually fitted.
Distraction continues over months; physiotherapy and regular X-ray checks accompany bone healing, as instructed by the treating team.

Limb lengthening is an orthopaedic procedure originally developed to treat leg length discrepancies and orthopaedic conditions, and it is now sometimes also performed for cosmetic reasons.
The procedure leverages bone's natural regeneration capacity: after a controlled bone cut, a distraction device gradually pulls the bone segments apart while new bone tissue fills the gap.
It is major surgery with a long rehabilitation period and possible complications. Before deciding, ask about suitability, risks, the surgeon's qualifications, costs and aftercare.
